A Canadian is planning an ambitious 4-month trip combining Muay Thai training, a 300cc motorcycle road trip from Da Nang to Hanoi, a bungee jump in Macau, and weeks unwinding in Taiwan. The detailed logistics reveal what it actually takes to pull off an extended moto adventure.
The Route Breakdown
Bangkok: 2 days to recover from jet lag flying from Montreal.
Koh Samui, Thailand: 5 weeks training at Lionheart Muay Thai. Renting a 300cc Honda Rebel for island mobility. No International Driving Permit (IDP), accepting the legal and insurance risk.
Vietnam: Mid-June onwards. Flying into Da Nang, immediately renting a 300cc Kawasaki, road-tripping north to Hanoi. Slow pace: about 6 days each in Hoi An, Hue, Phong Nha-Ke Bang, Ninh Binh, and Pu Luong.
Macau: A couple days strictly for the bungee jump.
Taiwan: Final weeks to relax and decompress.
The Legal Gray Area
The rider doesn't have an IDP and is "taking the risk on the legal/insurance front." This is not recommended, but it's the reality many motorcycle travelers face in Southeast Asia.
Thailand and technically require IDPs and local licenses. Police checkpoints exist, especially on tourist routes. Fines are common. More seriously, insurance won't cover accidents without proper documentation.
