A solo traveler planning 10 days in Guatemala faces a classic bucket-list dilemma: Do you try to see everything on one trip, or save highlights for future visits?
Their question, posted to r/solotravel, involves whether to add Flores and Tikal ruins at the end of an Antigua and Lake Atitlán itinerary—despite the logistical puzzle of multiple flights and tight connections.
The Original Plan
Their initial 10-day itinerary (April 30-May 10):
• Apr 30-May 4: Antigua (exploring + Acatenango volcano hike) • May 4-8: Lake Atitlán based in San Pedro (exploring San Juan, San Marcos, indigenous markets) • May 8-10: Panajachel area or possibly Iximché ruins
This is a classic first-time Guatemala route—colonial charm, volcano trekking, and lake-hopping. Solid, achievable, and logistically straightforward.
But then they realized: "Since Panajachel is the main ferry hub, I'll already be passing through it while staying around Lake Atitlán anyway. Because of that, I'm wondering if it makes more sense to use those last couple days to visit Flores/Tikal instead."
The Tikal Temptation
Tikal is one of Guatemala's crown jewels—massive Mayan ruins rising from rainforest, accessible via the gateway town of Flores in the northern Petén region.
UNESCO lists Tikal as one of the most important sites of Mayan civilization, with structures dating to 400 BC. The sunrise tour—climbing Temple IV to watch dawn break over the jungle canopy—is considered one of Central America's most spectacular travel experiences.
