Americans have backpacked across Europe and Southeast Asia yet barely seen their own country. The reason? The US lacks budget travel infrastructure that makes international backpacking accessible.
The Hostel Gap
According to Hostelworld, NYC has 40 hostels for 8.3 million people. Barcelona has over 200 for 1.6 million residents—10-15 times the density.
Transportation Desert
Amtrak from LA to SF (380 miles) costs $60-100 and takes 12 hours. A bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai (430 miles) costs $15-20.
The Economics
Three weeks in Thailand: $1,500-1,800 total. Three weeks exploring US cities without a car: $3,000-4,000 minimum.
What Would Change
Fixing this requires hostel development, transportation investment, and cultural shifts toward gap-year travel. Until then, Americans will continue finding it easier—and cheaper—to explore the world than home.
