Vientiane, Laos has claimed the title of world's cheapest travel destination at just $18.46 per day, according to the 2026 Backpacker Cost Index.
Southeast Asia continues its dominance of budget travel, offering comfortable daily costs of $18-35 across Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Luang Prabang comes in at $20.34, while both Hanoi and Saigon clock in around $20 per day, placing them in the global top five.
"Just spent a month in Laos. Can confirm the $18-20/day is realistic if you stay in dorms, eat street food, and take local buses," reported a recent backpacker on r/Shoestring. "Luang Prabang was the highlight—the morning alms ceremony, Kuang Si Falls, and the night market are all free or cheap."
But the biggest budget travel news of 2026 comes from South America: Bolivia is eliminating its $160 visa fee for American travelers, instantly making it dramatically more accessible.
"The Bolivia visa fee elimination is HUGE news," noted another traveler. "That $160 was literally a week's budget in Bolivia. Salt flats, Death Road, Lake Titicaca, La Paz... all now much more accessible for American backpackers."
Bolivia already ranked as South America's budget champion at $21-40 per day. Removing the $160 visa barrier saves more than a week's worth of travel budget and eliminates the bureaucratic hassle that previously deterred many Americans from visiting.
