Ukrainian forces demonstrated expanding long-range strike capabilities this week with successful attacks on Russian military infrastructure deep behind frontlines, hitting an oil terminal in Novorossiysk on the Black Sea coast and destroying Shahed drone launchers at Donetsk airport.
The strike on the Sheskharis oil terminal in Novorossiysk, Russia's primary Black Sea naval base, represents a significant blow to Russian logistics. The facility provides fuel supplies to Russia's Black Sea Fleet and serves as a critical node in the Kremlin's military supply chain for southern operations.
According to Ukrainian military sources, the attack successfully damaged storage tanks and support infrastructure at the terminal. While Russian authorities initially attempted to downplay the strike, local reports confirmed significant fire damage to the facility.
Novorossiysk's strategic importance extends beyond its role as Russia's largest Black Sea port. The city hosts major Russian naval facilities and serves as a logistics hub for military operations in occupied southern Ukraine and beyond. Striking the oil terminal disrupts both naval operations and the broader Russian military supply network.
In a separate operation, Ukrainian drones successfully struck Shahed launcher systems at Donetsk airport in occupied eastern Ukraine. The attack targeted the infrastructure Russia uses to launch Iranian-designed Shahed drones against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.
The timing of this strike carries particular significance. Russia launched over 6,000 strike drones against Ukraine in March alone, including approximately 1,000 drones in a single day on March 24. By targeting the launch infrastructure, Ukrainian forces aim to degrade Russia's ability to sustain these massive drone campaigns.
Donetsk airport, once a modern international facility, has been controlled by Russian forces since 2014. Moscow has repurposed the damaged complex as a military logistics hub, using it to stage equipment and launch both manned and unmanned aerial attacks against Ukrainian positions.
In Ukraine, as across nations defending their sovereignty, resilience is not just survival—it's determination to build a better future. These strikes demonstrate that Ukrainian forces are not merely defending against Russian attacks but actively degrading Moscow's ability to sustain its offensive operations.
