A Windows 11 update (KB5079473) has broken internet connectivity for multiple core Microsoft applications including Teams, Edge, OneDrive, and Copilot. Users across enterprises are reporting they can't access any Microsoft cloud services, while third-party browsers and apps work fine.
Nothing says "cloud-first strategy" like an update that breaks internet access to all your cloud apps.
This is why IT departments have trust issues with automatic updates. The irony: Microsoft's AI assistant Copilot can't help you fix the problem because the update broke Copilot too.
Here's what's happening: Users install the latest Windows 11 update, restart their machines, and suddenly can't connect to any Microsoft online services. Teams won't load. Edge can't browse. OneDrive won't sync. Copilot sits there, useless, unable to reach Microsoft's servers.
But Chrome works fine. Firefox works fine. Slack works fine. Third-party apps have no issues connecting to the internet. It's specifically Microsoft's own applications that can't reach Microsoft's own servers.
One Reddit user captured the absurdity: "My $3,000 Surface Pro can't access Microsoft services after installing a Microsoft update on Microsoft's operating system. But I can download Chrome and everything works. Brilliant."
This isn't a minor bug affecting a handful of users. Reports are flooding in from enterprise environments around the world. IT departments are scrambling to find workarounds. Microsoft's support forums are on fire.
The update was supposed to include security patches and performance improvements. Instead, it broke core functionality for millions of users. This is the Windows Update experience we've all come to know and dread.
Microsoft has acknowledged the issue, which is something. They're working on a fix, which is expected. But the fact that this shipped in the first place raises questions about their testing process. Did nobody at Microsoft try to use Teams after installing this update? Did nobody test OneDrive connectivity? Did nobody notice that their flagship AI assistant was completely broken?
