Microsoft just added a disclaimer to Copilot that should make every enterprise customer pause: the AI assistant is "for entertainment purposes only" and users shouldn't rely on it for important advice.
Let that sink in for a moment. The company that has been aggressively pushing AI into every product—Windows, Office, GitHub, Bing—is now officially saying their flagship AI tool isn't reliable enough for consequential decisions.
The contradiction problem
You've seen the ads. Microsoft has spent the last two years positioning Copilot as a productivity revolution that will transform how businesses work. They've sold it to enterprises as a tool for drafting emails, analyzing data, writing code, and making business decisions.
And now, buried in the terms of service, they're saying: actually, don't trust it for anything important.
To be fair, these might be standard legal boilerplate disclaimers. Every software product has a terms of service that says "we're not liable if this breaks." But there's a difference between a calendar app that might occasionally bug out and an AI assistant that could confidently tell you something completely wrong.
The problem with AI hallucinations isn't that they're obvious. It's that they're delivered with the same confidence as correct information. Copilot doesn't say "I'm not sure, but I think..." It just says things. And if you're not an expert in the domain you're asking about, you won't know when it's wrong.
The enterprise liability question
Here's where this gets interesting for businesses using Copilot. If Microsoft is officially saying the tool is for entertainment only, what happens when someone makes a business decision based on wrong information from Copilot?
Let's say a product manager uses Copilot to analyze customer data and makes a strategic call based on the output. Or a developer trusts Copilot's code review and ships a security vulnerability. Or a lawyer uses it to draft a contract and misses a critical clause.
Who's liable? Microsoft has now formally disclaimed responsibility. They've told you not to rely on it for important decisions. If you do anyway, that's on you.
This is the fundamental tension in commercial AI right now. Companies want to sell it as powerful enough to be useful, but they don't want to be liable when it inevitably screws up. So they market it aggressively and disclaim it carefully.
