A family's dream holiday turned into a nightmare when Booking.com sent them on a nine-hour journey across three countries to a resort that had been shuttered for six months—and the booking platform is refusing to cover the wasted travel expenses.
According to a detailed account shared on r/travel, a UK family drove from their home through France to Belgium in April 2026 to reach the "Waterside Elegance Sky Pad" at the Your Nature resort—a property specifically chosen to accommodate their two young sons, including an autistic, non-verbal child.
When they arrived at 3:20 PM on April 3rd, they found the main entrance blocked by metal construction fences, an empty car park, and a "CLOSED" sign on the door. An onsite caretaker told the family that the resort had entered administration in October 2025—and that he had informed Booking.com's partners "numerous times" that the property was completely closed, but the platform "kept sending people."
Booking.com continued taking bookings for six months after closure
Despite the resort's bankruptcy, Booking.com sent the family multiple written assurances that their booking was "all in order," processed their tourism tax payment, and even sent a check-in voucher on March 4th, 2026—five months after the property had closed.
While the family was driving back to the UK in distress, Booking.com sent them an automated message: "We hope you were able to check in quickly... We wish you a vacation with the warm feeling of a home away from home."
The family was forced to pay for an emergency return on the Le Shuttle train and scramble for last-minute accommodation. Total out-of-pocket losses: £449.94 in wasted transport, fuel, food, and emergency lodging.
Platform refuses liability for consequential damages
While Booking.com eventually refunded the bare accommodation cost after the platform is completely dodging the family's claim for travel expenses. The family's insurance company confirmed the error was entirely Booking.com's fault, and they've cited multiple breaches of UK consumer law, including:
