Lebanon's healthcare workers are once again in the crosshairs. According to Amnesty International, Israeli forces have killed 40 healthcare workers and wounded 96 more since fighting resumed on March 2, 2026—deploying what the human rights organization calls "the same deadly playbook" used during the 2024 escalation.
Kristine Beckerle, Amnesty's Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, did not mince words. "Israel is deploying the same deadly playbook it used in 2024 in Lebanon to kill dozens of health workers and devastate healthcare services," she said in a statement released Wednesday. "There has yet to be any accountability or redress for those violations, and now we're seeing healthcare workers once again killed and wounded."
The World Health Organization documented 28 attacks on healthcare facilities between March 2 and 15, killing 30 people and injuring 35. Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health reported that five hospitals have been forced to close. Among the dead are workers from the Islamic Health Association—a civilian medical institution affiliated with Hezbollah that provides emergency services across Lebanon in collaboration with the Ministry of Health—as well as paramedics from the Islamic Risala Scout Association and one Lebanese Red Cross medic.
In this region, today's headline is yesterday's history repeating.
The Israeli military has defended its actions by alleging, without providing evidence, that ambulances and medical facilities are being used for military activities. Spokesperson Avichay Adraee made similar claims in 2024. The Lebanese Ministry of Health has categorically denied these allegations.
