Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev arrived in Tbilisi for high-level meetings with Georgian leaders, marking a strategic deepening of bilateral relations centered on energy corridors and regional transit infrastructure.
The visit comes as Georgia consolidates its role as a critical energy and transportation bridge between the Caspian Sea and Europe, with Azerbaijan serving as a key supplier. The two nations have intensified cooperation on pipeline projects, rail connectivity, and the Middle Corridor trade route linking Central Asia to European markets.
President Aliyev met with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, with discussions focusing on expanding the Southern Gas Corridor and enhancing regional connectivity. The talks reflect Tbilisi's delicate balancing act between maintaining economic partnerships with Azerbaijan while navigating complex relationships with Armenia and managing Russian pressure on its territorial integrity.
The timing of the visit is significant. Following Azerbaijan's military victory in Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023 and the displacement of the region's ethnic Armenian population, regional dynamics have shifted dramatically. Georgia has sought to maintain pragmatic relations with both Baku and Yerevan, even as the two remain locked in a frozen conflict with unresolved territorial and diplomatic disputes.
