FX has ordered Very Young Frankenstein to series, pairing Zach Galifianakis with Taika Waititi for what I'm assuming will be either brilliant or a complete disaster. Maybe both.
On paper, this makes sense. Galifianakis has proven he can anchor a comedy series—Baskets was genuinely great, Between Two Ferns remains iconic. Waititi, meanwhile, has become Hollywood's go-to for irreverent takes on established IP, from What We Do in the Shadows to Our Flag Means Death.
But here's my concern: Waititi's recent output has been... uneven. Thor: Love and Thunder was a mess. Next Goal Wins underwhelmed. The man is spread so thin across projects that you worry whether he's actually directing or just lending his name for brand recognition. FX has a strong comedy track record, but that doesn't mean much if the creative team is phoning it in.
The Frankenstein framing is ripe for satire—Mary Shelley's meditation on creation and responsibility filtered through Waititi's comedic sensibility could yield something special. Or it could be Young Frankenstein references with none of the bite. It all depends on execution.
Galifianakis is the safer bet here. He understands deadpan, he understands pathos, and he's willing to commit to weird choices. If he's playing a young Victor Frankenstein, there's potential for something that balances horror and comedy without undermining either.
What gives me hope is the FX factor. They let Atlanta be Atlanta. They trusted to find its audience. They don't typically interfere with creators who have a vision. If and have a take on , will let them execute it.
