A digital nomad earning just enough to get by poses a question to r/digitalnomad: "If you had to choose ONE CITY (anywhere in LATAM), on a low budget, to live basically like a local, which one would you choose?"
The parameters: $1,000/month. No beach cities (he doesn't like heat). Must have hiking and mountains. Needs a social scene for making friends. Nightclubs aren't important, but bars and meeting people are.
The destination finalists
Reddit's digital nomad community has strong opinions, backed by lived experience. The top recommendations:
Oaxaca, Mexico led the pack. "$1000/month is genuinely comfortable there if you live like a local," one nomad wrote. "Shared housing $250-350, street food is incredible and cheap, amazing bar scene in the centro, mountains right outside the city, and a huge community of both locals and long-term foreigners."
Nomad List data shows Oaxaca averaging $1,200/month, but commenters insist $1,000 works if you avoid expat restaurants and tourist-focused rentals.
Quito, Ecuador emerged as the budget champion. "I lived there on $800/month comfortably," a former resident reported. "Shared apartment $300, food was absurdly cheap, great weekend hikes, and the social scene was solid. Plus everyone speaks slowly so learning Spanish is easier."
Ecuador's use of the US dollar eliminates currency exchange hassles, and Quito's elevation (9,350 feet) means cool temperatures year-round.
got mixed reviews. one nomad cautioned.
