Vietnam has overtaken Malaysia as the leading source of foreign students to Taiwan, a shift that reflects Vietnam's economic rise, Malaysia's demographic changes, and Taipei's southbound diplomacy—all part of Southeast Asia's evolving education and migration patterns.
According to recent data reported by The Straits Times, Vietnamese students now comprise the largest contingent of foreign undergraduates in Taiwan, surpassing Malaysians who held the top position for decades. The reversal marks a significant milestone in regional education flows and bilateral relationships.
Vietnam's Transformation
Thirty years ago, Vietnam was emerging from war and isolation, its education system underfunded and its citizens unable to afford overseas study. Today, Vietnam sends thousands of students abroad annually, a testament to three decades of rapid economic growth that has created a burgeoning middle class.
Vietnamese families increasingly prioritize higher education, viewing overseas degrees as pathways to better careers in Vietnam's expanding tech, manufacturing, and services sectors. Taiwan offers an attractive package: affordable tuition compared to Western universities, geographic proximity, and scholarship programs explicitly targeting Southeast Asian students under Taipei's "New Southbound Policy."
That policy, launched in 2016, aimed to diversify Taiwan's international relationships beyond mainland China by strengthening ties with ASEAN and South Asian nations. Education exchanges became a cornerstone, with Taiwan offering scholarships, simplified visa processes, and Mandarin language training to attract students from the region.
Malaysia's Shifting Patterns
Malaysia's decline as a source of Taiwanese students reflects different dynamics. Malaysian Chinese families traditionally sent children to Taiwan for Mandarin-language higher education, maintaining cultural and linguistic ties. But Malaysia's own universities have improved significantly, offering quality education without the expense and distance of studying abroad.
