The director of the National Counterterrorism Center resigned Monday in protest of the Trump administration's military campaign in Iran, declaring in a scathing resignation letter that the intelligence community never assessed the Islamic Republic posed an imminent threat to the United States.
Joe Kent, a career intelligence officer who has led the nation's counterterrorism efforts for the past two years, told colleagues he could not "in good conscience continue" in his role given the administration's decision to launch what he called an "unnecessary war" based on flawed premises.
"The intelligence did not support claims of an imminent threat from Iran requiring immediate military action," Kent wrote in his resignation letter, according to sources familiar with the document. "We have entered into a conflict that contradicts the professional assessments of the intelligence community and places American lives at greater risk."
The resignation marks the most significant public break within the national security establishment since President Donald Trump authorized strikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities two weeks ago. Kent's position at the National Counterterrorism Center gives him access to classified intelligence from all 18 US intelligence agencies, making his assessment particularly damaging to the White House's rationale for war.
Multiple current and former intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, corroborated Kent's characterization. They told reporters that while Iran maintained hostile intentions toward American interests in the region, the intelligence picture showed no evidence of imminent attack plans that would justify preemptive military strikes.
"This wasn't a Pearl Harbor or 9/11 scenario," said one former senior intelligence official. "Iran is a long-term adversary, but the threat assessment didn't change significantly in the weeks before the strikes. The decision to go to war was political, not based on a sudden intelligence development."
