Alexandre de Moraes, one of Brazil's most powerful Supreme Court justices, faces mounting pressure to recuse himself from corruption investigations after revelations that he vacationed at luxury properties owned by a banker now under federal investigation for money laundering and influence peddling.
O Globo reported that Moraes and his wife spent time at multiple properties belonging to Daniel Vorcaro, the CEO of Banco Master who is now at the center of one of Brazil's largest financial crime investigations. Photos show the couples together at Vorcaro's mansion in the exclusive beach resort of Trancoso, in addition to previously reported visits to his Brasília residence.
The scandal threatens to undermine judicial credibility at a moment when Brazil's Supreme Court exercises unprecedented power in policing political corruption. Moraes has been a central figure in investigations targeting former President Jair Bolsonaro and alleged coup plotters, making his own ethical conduct a flashpoint in Brazil's polarized political landscape.
"This isn't just about one judge's judgment," said Lenio Streck, a constitutional law professor at Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos. "It's about whether the institution policing corruption can police itself. The Brazilian people deserve answers."
In Brazil, as across Latin America's giant, continental scale creates both opportunity and governance challenges. The Supreme Court's power expanded dramatically over the past decade as it became the primary check on political corruption. But that concentration of authority in eleven unelected justices now faces scrutiny as 's personal relationships come under examination.
