Studio Ghibli's Kiki's Delivery Service is returning to theaters in a gorgeous 4K remaster, and if you haven't seen it on the big screen, now's your chance.
The 1989 film—Hayao Miyazaki's meditation on independence, creativity, and growing up—will screen in select theaters starting next month, followed by a 4K Blu-ray release. It's part of Ghibli's ongoing effort to remaster their catalog, and if you've seen what they did with Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, you know this will be stunning.
Kiki is often overlooked in Miyazaki's filmography—it lacks the epic scope of Mononoke or the surreal grandeur of Spirited Away—but it's one of his most quietly perfect films. The story of a young witch setting up a delivery service in a European seaside town is gentle, empathetic, and deeply attuned to the small anxieties of self-doubt and burnout.
What makes Kiki resonate today is its understanding of creative block. Midway through the film, Kiki loses her ability to fly—not because of some external curse, but because she's lost confidence in herself. Miyazaki doesn't offer easy answers. She doesn't overcome it through willpower or a pep talk. She just... keeps going. And eventually, the magic returns.
That's a bracingly adult message for a children's film, and it's why Kiki has endured. It's comfort food that doesn't condescend.
The 4K remaster will showcase Ghibli's hand-drawn animation in all its detail—the cobblestone streets, the way light dapples through trees, the expressive faces that convey emotion without dialogue. This is the film as Miyazaki intended, before compression and home video dulled its colors.
If you've never experienced Ghibli in theaters, start here. If you have, go again. Kiki's Delivery Service is a reminder that not every story needs to save the world. Sometimes, it's enough to deliver bread.
