According to Deadline, the gap between scripted TV seasons has nearly doubled in the first half of this decade. The data is stark: shows that once returned annually now routinely take two or three years between seasons, with Stranger Things serving as the poster child for this troubling trend.
The Netflix hit went from Season 3 in July 2019 to Season 4 in May 2022—a nearly three-year gap. Season 5 still hasn't arrived, meaning the show that defined Netflix's peak will have stretched its final two seasons across roughly six years. That's not a television series anymore. That's a film franchise with extra steps.
And it's not just Stranger Things. Succession took two years between its final seasons. The Last of Us made fans wait three years for Season 2. The White Lotus, Severance, Euphoria—the list of prestige shows with yawning gaps between seasons reads like a who's who of streaming's biggest hits.
The reasons are predictable and infuriating in equal measure. Bigger budgets mean longer production schedules. Showrunners with film ambitions (looking at you, Cary Fukunaga) treat eight-episode seasons like eight-hour movies. Streaming services greenlight everything, then make shows compete for post-production resources. And COVID accelerated trends that were already underway.

The traditional TV model—the one that built The Sopranos, Lost, Breaking Bad—understood that shows are relationships between creators and audiences that require consistency. You couldn't ask viewers to remember complex mythologies across three-year gaps. You couldn't expect actors to stay available indefinitely. You couldn't build cultural momentum when your show felt like a distant memory by the time it returned.
