A solo traveler's month-long South American journey turned into a nightmare: bedbugs in three consecutive hostels across Santiago, Buenos Aires, and Uruguay - despite checking beds and reading reviews beforehand.
"My mental health has taken a massive hit and the enjoyment of the trip has been ruined," the traveler wrote in an r/solotravel post that struck a nerve with the backpacking community. "Honestly it has changed how I see travel now, my single biggest passion."
The first incident happened in Santiago: distinctive bedbug bites forming the telltale "breakfast, lunch, and dinner" pattern, confirmed medically. She spent over €60 washing and drying everything right before a big five-day trek. The hostel accused her of making it up.
Three weeks later in Buenos Aires, it happened again - the first night, despite keeping belongings away from the bed. The hostel helped this time, but she threw out all her shoes and anything that couldn't be washed.
Then the next night in Uruguay: the exact same thing. The hostel refused to wash her items "in case she contaminated their machines" - even though they immediately removed the mattress, a tacit admission.
What Doesn't Work (And What Might)
The most frustrating part is that she did everything right according to standard advice - and it still failed. She checked beds. Didn't help. She kept bags away. Didn't help. She read reviews. Didn't help.
Travel health experts suggest more aggressive strategies: use bedbug-proof luggage liners that seal your entire pack, bring a headlamp for thorough inspections, heat-treat gear regularly in dryers, or consider private rooms in budget hotels for just $10-15 more than hostel dorms.
