The Solomon Islands appears on few bucket lists, and a detailed four-day trip report from Guadalcanal reveals exactly why: this is emphatically not a budget destination.
A 60-year-old solo traveler recently spent four days on Guadalcanal and documented costs that would make most backpackers wince. Even basic restaurants ran 150-200 Solomon Islands dollars (roughly $18-24 USD) per meal. A week-long midsize SUV rental? Around 660 SBD per day - that's over $550 USD total.
What You Get for the Money
The island offers genuine WWII history. Vilu War Museum preserves aircraft wrecks and military equipment, though the traveler described it as a "do it once" experience at 150 SBD entrance. Diving is the main draw - Emperor Divers charged 2,100 SBD (approximately $255 USD) for two shore dives on wrecks.
The US War Memorial offers panoramic views over Honiara - and it's free. But almost everything else comes with a fee, including beach access at around 20 SBD.
Infrastructure Challenges
Traffic in Honiara was compared to Bangkok during morning hours. Outside the city, road conditions deteriorate rapidly, with average speeds dropping to 25 km/h even in a 4WD vehicle.
The SIM card situation exemplifies the pace: the only vendor at the airport processed the queue so slowly that the traveler reported waiting 45 minutes just to purchase mobile data.
The Environmental Reality
What disappointed the traveler most wasn't the cost - it was the plastic pollution. Beautiful beaches were reportedly covered in bottles and cans, with people visibly throwing trash from moving vehicles. For a destination marketing itself on natural beauty, the waste management situation presents a jarring contrast.
