Planning a trip to Sarajevo? Throw away your guidebook's transportation advice—it's probably wrong. That's the hard-earned lesson from a recent solo traveler who discovered that Google Maps has the wrong bus routes, taxi apps don't work, and pickpockets target train stations.
But despite the logistical headaches, Sarajevo remains a compelling destination for travelers interested in recent history, authentic Balkan culture, and experiences that haven't yet been sanitized for Instagram.
A detailed trip report from a March 2026 visit to Sarajevo provides the kind of boots-on-the-ground information that guidebooks often miss—and that can make the difference between a frustrating visit and a meaningful one.
The Transportation Minefield
First, the bad news: much of the published transportation information about Sarajevo is outdated or incorrect.
The main tram route has apparently changed from #3 to #5, but Google Maps still shows #3, potentially sending travelers to the wrong stops. The 200E Centrotrans bus to the airport doesn't depart from where Google Maps indicates—the correct stop is across the street from City Hall on the east side.
Global taxi apps like Uber don't operate in Sarajevo, and the local alternative MojiTaxi is "useless," according to the traveler. Sarajevo Taxi, while available, reportedly refuses to use meters, a classic warning sign of tourist pricing.
And like many European tourist destinations, pickpockets operate around train and bus stations, particularly in the evening. The traveler reported seeing a group following them after arriving from Mostar around 7 PM.
What Makes the Trip Worthwhile
Despite the logistical challenges, Sarajevo offers experiences that justify the hassle—particularly for travelers interested in the Bosnian War and Yugoslav history.
The standout recommendation is the (30 EUR plus 10 EUR tunnel entrance fee). The 3-4 hour minibus tour visits the Yellow Fortress, Olympic stadium, former front lines, the famous Tunnel of Hope under the airport, and the abandoned bobsled track from the 1984 Winter Olympics.
