After nearly four months of claim processing delays and communication failures, the case raises serious questions about SafetyWing's reliability when travelers need coverage most.
The incident, detailed in a r/digitalnomad post, began in September 2025 when the traveler broke their wrist in a motorcycle accident requiring immediate surgery. Despite following proper protocols - calling ahead for approval, requesting direct billing, and submitting all required documentation - the experience quickly deteriorated.
11 Days to Respond to Emergency Surgery
The most alarming detail: SafetyWing took 11 days to respond to the emergency surgery request, despite the traveler calling multiple times from the hospital. By the time the company called back, the surgery was already complete and the patient was recovering.
"Their own policy says 72 hours max for non-emergencies, let alone actual emergencies," the traveler noted. "By the time they called back, surgery was already done and I was recovering."
The delays didn't end there. According to the account, one customer service representative questioned whether ambulance transport and broken bones even qualified as emergencies - a statement that should alarm anyone relying on the policy for medical coverage.
The Documentation Runaround
What followed was a months-long cycle of requesting identical paperwork multiple times. The traveler reports being asked for the same documents more than six times, ultimately translating medical bills themselves when SafetyWing's team couldn't process the information.
Additional problems included recommendations to transfer to a clinic without orthopedic specialists, incorrect reimbursement calculations that the policyholder had to correct, communications promising escalation to the medical team that were never followed up on, and nearly four months of silence on surgery cost reimbursement.
