Netflix has set a June 25 premiere date for the second season of its live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation, the streamer announced today.
The first season, which dropped last year, was one of those rare Netflix releases that didn't immediately get memory-holed after its opening weekend. It wasn't perfect—the pacing was uneven, some of the dialogue felt clunky, and die-hard fans of the original animated series had legitimate gripes about changes to character arcs. But it also wasn't the catastrophe that many feared after M. Night Shyamalan's 2010 film adaptation became a punchline.
According to Deadline, Season 2 will continue adapting the beloved Nickelodeon series, presumably diving into Book Two: Earth. The show has the advantage of having source material that's already been road-tested—the original Avatar is widely considered one of the best animated series ever made—but that's also a double-edged sword. Every creative choice gets scrutinized against what came before.
The real question is whether Netflix has the patience to let this show build over multiple seasons. The streamer has a notorious habit of canceling shows right when they're finding their footing (RIP The OA, 1899, and about a hundred others). Avatar has the benefit of being an IP play with built-in brand recognition, which usually buys more runway. But in the current streaming landscape, where every show needs to be an immediate cultural phenomenon or it's deemed a failure, nothing is safe.
For now, fans can mark their calendars for late June and hope that Season 2 smooths out some of the rough edges. The foundation is there. Whether Netflix builds on it or abandons it halfway through is anyone's guess.
