Russia has demanded that Ukraine withdraw all forces from the Donbas region within 60 days, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in what appears to be a calculated attempt to exploit Western distraction over the Iran crisis.
The ultimatum, reported by the Kyiv Independent, represents Moscow's most aggressive diplomatic posture since the early months of its 2022 invasion. The timing is no coincidence—Russia is clearly seeking to capitalize on American and European attention being consumed by the escalating Middle East conflict.
Zelensky characterized the demand as "delusional" and vowed that Ukraine would not surrender territory that its forces have defended at enormous cost in blood and resources. The Donbas region, comprising Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, has been the epicenter of fighting since 2014 and remains partially under Russian occupation.
To understand today's headlines, we must look at yesterday's decisions. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Western unity and sustained military aid to Kyiv proved decisive in preventing Moscow's rapid victory. But that unity now faces its greatest test, with carrier groups deployed to the and capitals consumed by energy crisis planning.
