A first-time international traveler from Mississippi just completed a 15-day journey through Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara with an impressive constraint: everything fit in under 7kg.
For someone who'd never left the country before, the achievement is particularly notable. "I'm 28 years old and this was my first time leaving the country," the traveler shared in a detailed gear breakdown. "Grew up in a small town in Mississippi, and we were not the family that did vacations every year."
The ultra-light packing list demonstrates what's possible when you ruthlessly prioritize: three sets of shorts and t-shirts, flip flops, an inflatable neck pillow, a small power bank, charger, plug adapter, an Insta360 GO Ultra camera, and an empty water bottle. That's it. No extra shoes, no "just in case" items, no wardrobe variety—just the absolute essentials.
"The setup worked," they confirmed. Fifteen days across four Japanese cities proved the system viable, though the strategy requires commitment to quick-dry fabrics and frequent washing.
Technology played a crucial supporting role. The app arsenal included Skyscanner for flights, Booking.com for hotels, the Suica card app for Japan's transit system, Klook for attraction tickets, Voicetra for text translation, and Kuli Kuli for translating restaurant menus. The Safety Tips app provided earthquake alerts—a necessary precaution in Japan.
The Insta360 GO Ultra camera deserves special mention. "It's tiny and has this little magnetic lanyard you hang around your neck," they explained. "Clips straight to my chest or neck, footage syncs to your phone automatically through the app, very easy. Got so much vlog material without thinking twice." Hands-free vlogging with minimal gear—exactly the minimalist philosophy in action.
