Everyone's worried about Meta smart glasses recording them without consent. But here's the twist: if you're wearing the glasses, you're being surveilled just as much as the people around you.
Gizmodo makes this point smartly in a piece that flips the usual privacy narrative. We spend so much time debating whether it's ethical for Meta Ray-Bans to record strangers in public that we forget the person wearing them is also feeding data into Meta's ecosystem.
Every video you capture. Every photo you take. Every voice command you issue. All of it flows through Meta's servers, gets processed by their AI models, and contributes to a surveillance profile that knows more about you than you probably realize.
The technology is impressive. The question is whether you're the customer or the product.
Let's be clear about what these glasses do. They're essentially body-worn cameras with a direct pipeline to Meta. The pitch is convenience—capture moments hands-free, get AI assistance, stay connected. The reality is you're volunteering to be a walking sensor node in Meta's data collection network.
This is different from using a smartphone. When you pull out your phone to take a photo, there's a conscious decision and a visible act. With smart glasses, recording is ambient and constant. You might not even remember you captured something, but Meta does.
The privacy implications cut both ways. Yes, there are legitimate concerns about people being recorded without knowledge or consent. But there's an equally valid concern about users who think they're just documenting their lives, unaware of how much behavioral data they're generating.
Meta has spent years building AI models that can extract incredible insights from visual data. They can identify objects, recognize faces, infer activities, and build detailed profiles of how you move through the world. Smart glasses give them a first-person perspective on all of it.
The terms of service almost certainly grant Meta broad rights to use this data for "improving services" and "training AI models." That's standard Silicon Valley language for "we own everything you generate and can use it however we want."
What makes this particularly insidious is the asymmetry of awareness. People around you might notice the glasses and object to being recorded. But you might not fully grasp that you're the one under the most sophisticated surveillance.
Meta knows where you go, who you spend time with, what you look at, what catches your attention. They can infer your interests, your relationships, your routines. And because the glasses are designed to be worn throughout the day, they get a temporal richness that social media posts never provided.
There's also the question of security. If these glasses are constantly streaming or storing video, what happens when they get hacked? Or when Meta suffers a data breach? Suddenly your first-person life footage is in the hands of whoever compromised the system.
The counterargument—and I've heard it from Meta advocates—is that this is voluntary. No one forces you to buy smart glasses. If you're worried about privacy, don't use them.
But that ignores the social pressure and network effects. If smart glasses become normalized, opting out means missing out on whatever social or professional advantages they provide. That's not really voluntary—it's coerced by the surrounding technology ecosystem.
We've seen this pattern before with smartphones, social media, and every other "optional" technology that became mandatory through adoption dynamics. The people who resist are marginalized until resistance becomes impossible.
The technology is impressive. Meta's AI integration with these glasses is genuinely useful in ways that go beyond gimmicks. But usefulness doesn't make surveillance ethical, especially when the people being surveilled most comprehensively are the ones who bought the product.
