One person was killed and 36 injured overnight on May 14 as Russian forces launched a massive combined missile and drone assault on Kyiv, leaving an entire section of a residential apartment building collapsed and rescue workers searching through rubble for trapped survivors.
Eleven people were rescued from under the partially collapsed structure as emergency crews worked through the night, according to reports from the Kyiv Independent. The attack extended a daytime drone assault into the night, forcing thousands of Kyiv residents to shelter in metro stations as air raid sirens wailed across the capital.
The scale of the assault was unprecedented: 1,560 drones and 56 missiles launched against targets across Ukraine in a coordinated barrage designed to overwhelm air defense systems. Video footage showed families huddled on metro station platforms, children sleeping on makeshift bedding while their parents kept watch, a scene that has become grimly familiar to Kyiv residents over three years of war.
"We heard the explosions and immediately went to the metro," one resident told local journalists. "We stayed there until morning. This is our life now."
The attack on residential areas represents a continuation of Russia's systematic targeting of civilian infrastructure, a pattern documented by international observers as potential war crimes. The overnight assault follows months of intensified strikes on Ukrainian cities, particularly targeting energy infrastructure and population centers.
Emergency services reported that search and rescue operations continued into the morning, with specialized equipment brought in to carefully excavate the collapsed building section. The Kyiv city administration mobilized additional medical teams to treat the injured, many of whom suffered crush injuries and trauma from the building collapse.
For Kyiv residents, the massive attack underscored the persistent threat despite sophisticated air defense systems. Ukrainian forces intercepted the majority of incoming missiles and drones, but the sheer volume of projectiles ensured some reached their targets. The capital's multi-layered defense system, including Western-provided Patriot batteries and domestically-produced systems, worked continuously throughout the night.
