Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has activated its digital voter verification portal, allowing citizens to confirm their registration details ahead of upcoming elections.
The system, accessible at verify.iebc.or.ke or via SMS to 70000, enables Kenyans to check their voting particulars by entering their ID or passport number and year of birth. Those who discover errors in their records can visit their registration center for corrections.
The portal represents the latest evolution in Kenya's digital democracy infrastructure—a system born from the chaos of the 2007-2008 post-election violence that killed over 1,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands. Since then, Kenya has invested heavily in electronic voter registration, biometric identification, and transparent tallying systems.
East Africa's tech hub is extending its innovation beyond mobile money and into democratic participation. The verification system reduces registration errors, prevents voter roll manipulation, and gives citizens direct access to their electoral status—no intermediaries, no bureaucratic delays.
It's a reminder that democracy, like M-Pesa, works best when it's accessible, transparent, and in citizens' hands.
Your Vote, Your Future—as the portal's tagline says. In Kenya, they're building the infrastructure to make that more than a slogan.
