In the never-ending quest to turn every animated classic into a live-action cash cow, Disney has officially cast Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel in their upcoming Tangled remake. And look, if we must do this—and apparently we must—at least they're casting well.
Hahn is on an absolute tear right now. WandaVision turned her into a Marvel icon. Agatha All Along proved she could carry her own series. She's got the range to play manipulative villainy with just enough warmth to make it believable, which is exactly what Mother Gothel requires. This is inspired casting for a project that probably shouldn't exist.
Let's address the elephant in the kingdom: does the world need a live-action Tangled? The 2010 animated film is perfect as is—gorgeous animation, a killer Alan Menken score, and a story that works precisely because it's animated. Rapunzel's impossibly long, glowing hair defies physics in ways that will look either expensive or silly in live-action. Probably both.
But Disney is committed to this strategy, and the box office keeps proving them right. The Little Mermaid made $569 million. Beauty and the Beast crossed $1.2 billion. Audiences clearly want to see these stories reimagined, even if critics and animation purists roll their eyes.
Hahn's casting does raise the quality ceiling considerably. Mother Gothel is one of Disney's most psychologically complex villains—a gaslighting narcissist who genuinely believes she loves Rapunzel while simultaneously imprisoning her. That requires an actress who can navigate contradictions, and Hahn excels at playing characters who are both charming and deeply unsettling.
