Travelers are increasingly reporting hostile experiences in Egypt, with complaints about racial harassment, aggressive scamming, and the mental toll of constant pestering reaching a tipping point that's threatening the country's tourism recovery.
A viral Reddit thread posted by a Japanese traveler details harrowing experiences in Aswan and Cairo that paint a troubling picture of how persistent scammers and harassment are damaging Egypt's reputation among international visitors.
The Reality Behind the Pyramids
"As a Japanese traveler, the amount of casual racism I've encountered is shocking," the traveler wrote. "It's mostly from groups of young Egyptian men. I get mocked, pointed at, and called names just for walking down the street. It's not 'curiosity'—it's harassment."
But racism isn't the only issue plaguing visitors. The post describes an exhausting cycle of scams that have become so pervasive they're impossible to avoid. The "helper" scam involves people forcefully offering unsolicited directions or taking photos, then demanding exorbitant tips. When refused, some become aggressive.
Shopkeepers regularly "forget" to give correct change, then suddenly "don't understand English" when called out. The constant pressure to extract money from tourists has created an environment where every interaction feels like a potential trap.
The Mental Toll of Defensive Travel
"I've traveled to many countries, but the level of persistence here is draining," the traveler explained. "You can't enjoy the pyramids or the Nile because you're constantly on the defensive, saying 'No' a hundred times a day to people who refuse to take 'No' for an answer."
