Croatia has been written off by many travelers as "too touristy," especially Dubrovnik—the Adriatic city that became synonymous with cruise ship crowds and Instagram hordes after serving as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
But a recent 11-day trip report suggests the overtourism narrative may be exaggerated—or at least, manageable with smart planning.
The verdict: still worth visiting
According to a detailed r/travel post, a traveler who spent time in Dubrovnik, Korcula, Hvar, and Split in May 2024 found the experience "highly recommend[able]" despite Dubrovnik's notorious reputation.
"While Dubrovnik in particular has a bit of a negative reputation for overcrowding I never felt like it was too overwhelming, especially if you dodge the busy areas in the middle of the day," the poster wrote.
The key factors that made the trip work:
Timing. May sits at the edge of peak season—warm enough for pleasant weather but before the July-August crush when cruise ships and school holidays converge.
Strategic avoidance. Staying away from the Old Town during midday hours when day-trippers and cruise passengers flood the streets made a significant difference.
Island escapes. Visiting Lopud Island and Mljet Island provided quieter alternatives with equally stunning scenery and "beautiful clear water."
