South Africa's Government of National Unity faces its gravest test since formation as major coalition partners—the Democratic Alliance, Inkatha Freedom Party, and Freedom Front Plus—announced support for an impeachment inquiry against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the 2020 Phala Phala farm scandal.
The move follows a Friday Constitutional Court ruling mandating that Parliament proceed with an impeachment inquiry unless a court sets aside the parliamentary report examining the incident—in which approximately $580,000 in cash was allegedly stolen from Ramaphosa's game farm and never properly reported to authorities.
Despite Ramaphosa's Monday announcement that he would legally challenge the report's validity, coalition partners insist constitutional obligations supersede political considerations.
"The impeachment process is an institutional responsibility of Parliament and can't be delayed by legal proceedings where applicable," declared Mkhuleko Hlengwa, spokesperson for the IFP, the third-largest party in the coalition government.
Corne Mulder, leader of the Freedom Front Plus, characterized the president's response as "a desperate attempt to save himself," emphasizing that core facts about the cash origins and handling remain unaddressed regardless of legal maneuvering.
The crisis tests whether South Africa's experimental coalition governance model—formed after the African National Congress lost its parliamentary majority in 2024 elections—can survive profound internal disagreement. The GNU brought together ideologically diverse parties ranging from the centrist DA to smaller formations like the FF+, all committed to preventing more radical opposition parties from gaining power.
Constitutional law experts note that impeachment requires a two-thirds parliamentary majority, making removal unlikely without broader ANC support. Yet the inquiry process itself carries significant political weight, potentially exposing embarrassing details about cash handling, farm security operations, and presidential accountability.
