Burger King is piloting an AI system called "Patty" that monitors employee interactions in real-time to track how friendly they are. The system listens for phrases like "please," "thank you," and "welcome to Burger King," converting conversations into a friendliness metric that managers can review.

The technology works through headsets worn by staff, powered by OpenAI technology. It's being tested in roughly 500 U.S. locations, with nationwide deployment planned by the end of 2026. The chief digital officer says they're "iterating on ways to capture the tone of conversations, not just the words."

Let that sink in: AI analyzing whether fast food workers sound sufficiently cheerful while being paid minimum wage to handle angry customers during rush hour.

Burger King insists the system is about coaching and operations, not evaluating individual employees. That's what every company says when they deploy workplace surveillance. Then the metrics start affecting schedules, raises, and who gets fired when locations need to cut staff.

Research from the American Psychological Association found that employees aware of monitoring report higher stress from micromanagement and emotional exhaustion. That's not surprising - being constantly surveilled while trying to work is exhausting.

The broader pattern here is AI moving from screening resumes to monitoring every interaction. The same technology that can transcribe calls and analyze sentiment can be pointed at workers and used to enforce emotional labor at scale.

The question nobody in management seems to ask is: what happens when your friendliness algorithm decides someone isn't smiling enough? When the AI determines that a worker dealing with harassment from a customer should have maintained a more positive tone? When metrics designed to "improve customer experience" become a tool for eliminating anyone the algorithm flags as insufficiently enthusiastic?

This technology will spread because it's cheap and because managers love quantified metrics. Whether it actually improves anything or just makes work more miserable is someone else's problem.
