Budget travelers planning trips to South America may need to rethink their assumptions about Argentina. A recent two-week trip report reveals the country is now surprisingly expensive - with Patagonia destinations costing more than popular Asian countries like Japan and Taiwan.
"Argentina was really expensive, partially thanks to their improving economy," wrote the traveler, who visited El Palmar National Park, El Calafate, El Chaltén, Buenos Aires, and Rosario in December 2025. "I spent much more money there than in Asian countries such as Japan and Taiwan. El Calafate was particularly expensive."
The Budget Reality Check
This challenges the long-held perception of South America as a budget-friendly destination. For years, travelers have flocked to Argentina specifically because of favorable exchange rates and low costs. But the country's economic stabilization has brought booming business - and significantly higher prices.
The traveler noted seeing "business booming in many places," a positive sign for the local economy but a surprise for budget-conscious tourists who remember Argentina as one of the continent's best values.
When to Visit (and What to Expect)
Despite the costs, the landscapes remain spectacular. The trip included hiking to Laguna de los Tres from El Chaltén - a 20-kilometer round trip with a "really steep and tiring" final kilometer. glacier and offered some of the most impressive scenery the traveler had ever seen.
