Ed Skrein has joined Amazon Prime Video's God of War series as Baldur, according to The Hollywood Reporter. And suddenly, Amazon's Norse mythology epic just got a lot more interesting.
If you've played the game, you know Baldur is a crucial character—the invulnerable god who can't feel anything, driven to violence by his desperate search for sensation. It's a meaty role that requires an actor who can balance menace with tragedy. Skrein, who's done strong work in Deadpool and Game of Thrones, certainly has the range.
But let's address the elephant in the room: can Amazon pull off what HBO did with The Last of Us? Because that's the standard now. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann proved that prestige video game adaptations are possible if you respect the source material and hire people who actually understand the medium.
God of War has similar potential. The 2018 game was a masterclass in character-driven storytelling wrapped in Norse mythology. Kratos's relationship with his son Atreus gave the franchise an emotional depth that transcended the genre. It's The Road meets Norse mythology meets spectacular action.
The question is whether Amazon can resist the temptation to over-explain, to add unnecessary subplots, to turn a focused father-son story into a sprawling fantasy epic. The Last of Us worked because HBO trusted the source material. The Rings of Power struggled because Amazon tried to make their own thing instead.
