After 34 days and 800 kilometers on the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrim who carried the same 38L pack every single day has a message for future walkers: your toiletry kit matters more than you think.
Posting to r/onebag after completing the French Way from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, the hiker shared the streamlined essentials that prevented skin and oral problems over more than a month of constant walking.
"What I hadn't anticipated before setting off was how invaluable and essential that basic toiletries kit proved," they wrote. "Skin issues, oral problems... you never know when they might arise."
The Four-Item Kit That Worked
Their setup was ruthlessly minimal:
Electric toothbrush (mini, without charger)—ran on a single charge for weeks
Soap (for hair, body, and teeth)—one bar, multiple uses
Body lotion—the one "heavy" item they considered essential
Nail clippers—prevented minor issues from becoming major problems
That's it. No shampoo. No separate toothpaste. No facial cleanser or deodorant or sunscreen mentioned. Just four items that covered the actual needs of daily long-distance walking.
What They Refused to Cut
The body lotion stands out as the one "luxury" in an otherwise spartan kit. Why?
Blister prevention. Moisturized feet are less prone to friction and hot spots.
Skin recovery. Daily 20-30km walks in varying weather beat up exposed skin. Lotion aids repair overnight.
