We've spent so much time talking about what Zion Williamson can't do that we've completely missed what he's actually doing.
Tonight, the New Orleans Pelicans star is slated to make his 26th consecutive start – the longest streak of his career. For most players, that's not a headline. For Zion, it's a mountain climbed.
His previous consecutive-game streak was 25, back in his second year. Since then, it's been a revolving door of injuries, setbacks, and questions about whether his body could hold up to the rigors of an NBA season.
But here we are. Twenty-six straight starts. And counting.
"I'm just focused on staying healthy and helping my team," Zion said recently. "That's all that matters."
He's averaging 21.8 points per game this season, which ranks 26th in the league. Not bad for a guy who missed the first seven games after returning from injury and came off the bench to ease back into action.
Look, I'll be the first to admit – I've been skeptical. The injuries, the weight concerns, the questions about his commitment to conditioning. It's been hard to watch one of the most talented players in the league struggle to stay on the court.
But you know what? Zion is proving the doubters wrong. One game at a time. One start at a time. He's doing the work.
He's not putting up the 27-points-per-game MVP-caliber numbers we saw in flashes early in his career. But he's playing. And in today's NBA, where load management and rest days have become the norm, just showing up consistently is an achievement.
For New Orleans, this is everything. The Pelicans have invested heavily in Zion – both financially and emotionally. They've built their franchise around the belief that he can be a generational talent. But none of that matters if he can't stay healthy.
Twenty-six straight starts isn't just a number. It's proof. Proof that Zion's body is holding up. Proof that the medical staff's plan is working. Proof that he's committed to being on the court.
