Folks, we just got the answer to one of the biggest what-ifs in modern soccer. And it's uglier than anyone imagined.
Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez revealed in a stunning interview that Lionel Messi's return to Barcelona after winning the 2022 World Cup was a "done deal" with La Liga approval — but club president Joan Laporta personally stopped the signing because he feared Messi would turn against him politically.
Let me repeat that: Messi wanted to come home. La Liga approved it. The deal was done. And the club president killed it because of politics.
"Leo Messi back to Barcelona was a done deal after that World Cup won by Argentina," Xavi said in an interview with La Vanguardia. "It was done. We also had La Liga's green light and Messi wanted to return but Laporta stopped the signing. Laporta told me Messi was gonna go against him and he couldn't allow that."
This is the ugly business side of the beautiful game, folks. This is what happens when egos and politics matter more than winning.
Imagine it: Messi, fresh off winning the World Cup — the one trophy that eluded him his entire career — coming back to Barcelona for a victory lap. Playing at the Camp Nou one more time. Giving the fans who worshipped him for two decades a proper goodbye.
Instead, he's in Miami. And Barcelona is… well, Barcelona is still trying to figure out how to replace the greatest player in their history.
