The Wrestling Federation of India has declared star wrestler Vinesh Phogat ineligible to compete until June 26, 2026, barring her from domestic events and escalating a conflict that exposes the troubled intersection of sports governance, anti-doping enforcement, and political maneuvering in Indian athletics.
The federation issued a 15-page show-cause notice alleging multiple violations, including failure to complete the mandatory six-month notice period required for athletes returning from retirement, whereabouts failures that prevented doping control tests, and what officials termed "indiscipline" that "caused lasting damage to the reputation of Indian wrestling."
The most serious charge involves anti-doping protocol. According to the show-cause notice, Phogat announced her return to competitive wrestling on December 12, 2025, targeting the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. But just six days later, on December 18, 2025, doping control officers were unable to locate her for a mandatory test—a whereabouts failure that the International Testing Agency formally recorded.
The federation contends that Phogat failed to satisfy the United World Wrestling's Article 5.7 requirement for six months' advance notice before returning to competition following a retirement or sabbatical. Phogat had declared herself on sabbatical until August 2025 on December 14, 2024, following her controversial disqualification from the Paris Olympics after failing to make weight by 100 grams.
That Paris disqualification—coming after Phogat had already defeated three opponents and was positioned to compete for gold—devastated Indian sports fans and ignited debates about weight management protocols. Phogat has claimed that the disqualification was politically motivated, related to her participation in protests against former Wrestling Federation president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faces sexual harassment allegations from multiple women wrestlers.
