Digital nomads are adding a new stop to their Latin America circuits: Bogotá for LASIK eye surgery at a fraction of Western prices.
A post on r/digitalnomad this week detailed pricing from a Bogotá clinic: traditional laser eye surgery for both eyes runs 3.2 million COP (approximately $800 USD) before incidentals, with total costs likely around 4 million COP ($1,100 USD). A more advanced procedure called FEMTOLASIK costs roughly double at 6.6 million COP base price.
The comparison is stark. LASIK surgery in the United States typically costs $2,000-3,000 per eye—meaning a bilateral procedure runs $4,000-6,000. In the UK, prices are similar. Even with flights and accommodation, getting the procedure in Colombia can save $2,000-3,000.
But medical tourism isn't just about cost. Colombia, particularly Bogotá and Medellín, has developed a reputation for high-quality healthcare at competitive prices. Many surgeons trained internationally, clinics use the same equipment as Western facilities, and English-speaking staff cater to the growing medical tourism market.
The digital nomad angle makes sense. Unlike medical tourists who fly in specifically for a procedure, nomads already working remotely in Latin America can easily add Bogotá to their rotation. Post-surgery recovery typically requires 1-2 weeks of limited screen time and avoiding strenuous activity—perfect for exploring a new city at a slower pace.
Bogotá itself offers solid digital nomad infrastructure: reliable coworking spaces, affordable long-term accommodation ($400-800/month for decent apartments), and a growing expat community. Nomad List ranks it highly for remote work, with strong internet speeds and reasonable costs of living around $1,200-1,500/month all-in.
The risks and considerations: Medical tourism always carries risks. Language barriers, different medical standards, and complications that arise after returning home are real concerns. Travelers should thoroughly research clinics, verify surgeon credentials, and ensure they understand post-operative care requirements.
Recovery logistics matter too. LASIK patients typically need follow-up appointments within the first week and again at one month. Nomads need to plan their travel schedule accordingly—not ideal if you'd planned to move to Ecuador two days after surgery.
Still, the economics are compelling. For digital nomads without comprehensive health insurance (common for location-independent workers), paying out-of-pocket for procedures becomes inevitable. Choosing where to get that work done is simply another optimization—like choosing Chiang Mai over London for cost of living.
Other Latin American destinations popular for medical procedures include Mexico (dental work), Costa Rica (cosmetic surgery), and Argentina (various procedures). Thailand and Turkey dominate the Asian and European medical tourism markets respectively.
For nomads already planning extended time in Colombia, bundling a long-overdue LASIK procedure with their stay makes practical sense. Just budget extra time, research thoroughly, and don't plan any whitewater rafting trips for at least a month afterward.
