This is what March is all about, folks.
No. 11 seed VCU was down 19 points to No. 6 seed North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Nineteen points. Everyone changed the channel. Everyone except the people who stayed and witnessed history.
The Rams completed the largest comeback in first-round tournament history, stunning the Tar Heels 82-78 in overtime. When it was 19-point deficit, the win probability was less than 1%. Now Chapel Hill is going home, and VCU is dancing into the Round of 32.
"We never stopped believing," VCU guard Marcus Johnson said after the game. "Coach kept telling us - one possession at a time. Get stops. Make shots. That's all we did."
But it wasn't just one possession at a time. It was full-court pressure. It was Havoc defense - the suffocating, relentless style that VCU made famous during their Final Four run in 2011. The Tar Heels had no answer. Turnover after turnover. Rushed shots. Panic.
North Carolina led 46-27 early in the second half, and you could feel them already thinking about their next opponent. That was their mistake. VCU chipped away, cutting it to 10, then 6, then 2. The Rams tied it with 1:37 left in regulation on a three-pointer, and the place went absolutely bonkers.
In overtime, it was all VCU. They outscored North Carolina 12-8, hitting clutch free throws and getting stops when it mattered. The Tar Heels, a team with six National Championships, couldn't close it out against the scrappy underdogs.
"We got comfortable," UNC coach Hubert Davis said, his voice heavy with disappointment. "You can't do that in March. They kept fighting, and we stopped. That's on me."
This is why we love March Madness. This is why the tournament is the best postseason in sports. A No. 11 seed from the Atlantic 10 just knocked out a blue-blood program with one of the greatest comebacks in tournament history. Havoc is back, baby, and the bracket just got a whole lot more interesting.
That's what sports is all about, folks.
