A 30-year-old Indian traveler planning their first US solo trip budgeted 21 days to hit NYC, Boston, Niagara Falls, Chicago, Philly, DC, Orlando, and Miami - and they're asking if it's too much.
Spoiler: fellow travelers say yes, and here's why.
The proposed itinerary:
• NYC – 4 days • Boston – 2 days • Niagara Falls – 1 day • Chicago – 3 days • Philadelphia – 1 day • Washington DC – 2 days • Orlando – 2 days (mainly Disney) • Miami – 3 days
Starting and ending in Charlotte. Transport: mix of trains (Northeast), budget flights, and buses.
The fundamental problem: The US doesn't work like Europe for budget backpackers.
Distances are massive. Boston to Chicago is 1,600km - equivalent to Paris to Warsaw. Chicago to Orlando is 2,000km - Paris to Istanbul. You're not hopping on a €20 bus and arriving in 3 hours.
Hostel culture in the US is limited compared to Europe or Southeast Asia. Major cities have a few, but they're often more expensive and less social than their European counterparts. Budget accommodation frequently means sketchy motels or expensive Airbnbs.
Transportation costs add up fast. Amtrak isn't cheap. Budget airlines like Spirit and Frontier charge for everything - bags, seat selection, breathing. Greyhound buses exist but are slow, uncomfortable, and not dramatically cheaper than flying.
One American commenter was blunt: "This itinerary is geographically inefficient and too tiring for 3 weeks. You're spending more time traveling between cities than actually experiencing them."
