Ukrainian forces launched one of their most significant drone strikes on the Moscow region early Sunday morning, with Russian officials reporting more than 70 drones intercepted across multiple districts in what marks a dramatic escalation of Kyiv's long-range campaign against military and industrial targets deep inside Russian territory.
The coordinated assault targeted locations including the Durykino oil depot, the ELMA technopark in Zelenograd where electronics manufacturers supporting Russia's defense industry operate, and industrial facilities across the greater Moscow metropolitan area. Local residents reported explosions and air defense activity throughout the early morning hours, with video footage circulating on social media showing fires at several impact sites.
President Volodymyr Zelensky defended the strikes as a "completely fair response" to Russia's ongoing attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure. Speaking to reporters, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is systematically targeting Russia's war-making capacity, including fuel depots, military production facilities, and logistics hubs that support the invasion.
"Every strike on Russian military infrastructure, on their fuel reserves, on their logistics centers brings peace closer," Zelensky said. "Russia understands only one language—the language of consequences for their actions."
Military analysts say the Moscow strikes demonstrate Ukraine's expanding capability to project force hundreds of kilometers beyond the front lines. The attacks utilized a combination of domestically-produced drones, including long-range UAVs capable of carrying significant explosive payloads to targets up to 1,700 kilometers from Ukrainian launch sites.
