Ukrainian forces have liberated more than 400 square kilometers of occupied territory over recent weeks as Kyiv's military seizes the initiative across multiple front sectors, according to data compiled by military analysts and confirmed by Ukrainian defense officials.
The territorial gains, concentrated primarily near Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region and along key axes in Zaporizhzhia, mark a significant shift from the grinding defensive battles that characterized much of late 2025. Ukrainian commanders emphasized that the advances prioritize methodical operations designed to preserve soldier lives while systematically degrading Russian defensive capabilities.
"We are not racing for headlines or map changes," said one senior Ukrainian officer who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security protocols. "We are conducting deliberate operations to destroy enemy forces and create conditions for larger breakthroughs when the time is right."
The advances come as Russian forces prepare for what Ukrainian intelligence assesses could be a major spring offensive, with Moscow massing reserves and equipment in rear areas. Western intelligence services report that Russia continues to sustain significant casualties—estimated at over 1,000 personnel daily—but maintains recruitment levels sufficient to keep units at operational strength.
Ukrainian tactical successes have been enabled by several factors, military analysts note. Improved drone warfare capabilities have given Ukrainian forces unprecedented reconnaissance and strike capacity. In February alone, Ukrainian drones struck more than 105,200 Russian targets, including fortified positions, logistics nodes, and command posts.
