Ukraine has deployed 201 drone operators and technical specialists to the Middle East to assist allied forces countering Iranian aerial attacks, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Tuesday, marking Kyiv's most significant military contribution to a conflict beyond its own borders since the Russian invasion began.
The deployment, confirmed by Zelensky during an address to the UK Parliament, represents both a strategic partnership with Western allies and recognition of Ukraine's unique battlefield expertise. Three years of high-intensity warfare against Russia have transformed Ukrainian forces into the world's leading practitioners of drone warfare, experience now being shared with American, Israeli, and Gulf state militaries.
"These operators know how to counter Iranian-designed systems because they face them every day," Zelensky said, according to the Kyiv Independent. Russia has deployed thousands of Iranian-manufactured Shahed drones against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, forcing Kyiv's forces to develop sophisticated countermeasures.
The Ukrainian personnel, whose specific locations were not disclosed for operational security reasons, bring capabilities that include electronic warfare, drone detection, and kinetic interception techniques. Ukraine has pioneered the use of small, inexpensive quadcopters to intercept larger kamikaze drones—a method that costs approximately $10,000 compared to the $4 million price tag of missiles, noted in a separate briefing.
