Tanzania's billionaire businessman Rostam Aziz did not mince words during his recent press conference announcing his acquisition of Kenya's Nation Media Group, the region's largest media house. His blunt assessment of Kenyan exceptionalism has sparked a necessary conversation about regional integration in East Africa.
"We often hear Kenyans say they are the Big Brother of East Africa," Aziz told reporters, according to social media coverage of the event. "But this attitude of looking down on our neighbors is precisely what holds back true regional growth."
The acquisition marks a significant shift in East African media ownership. Nation Media Group, founded in 1959, operates flagship publications including the Daily Nation and The East African, with bureaus across the continent. The company's reach extends from Kenya to Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, making it a cornerstone of regional journalism.
Aziz's comments address a long-standing tension within the East African Community. Kenya has historically dominated the regional economy, hosting the EAC headquarters in Nairobi and serving as the financial hub for the five-nation bloc. But Tanzania's economy has grown steadily, and recent infrastructure investments - including the Dar es Salaam port expansion and the Standard Gauge Railway - signal shifting regional dynamics.
"If we want a truly strong East African Community, we must stop viewing our neighbors as less capable rivals," Aziz said.
