Folks, you cannot make this stuff up. An actual, real-life spy scandal in English football – and it involves a guy hiding behind a tree.
William Salt, a Southampton intern, was photographed lurking behind a tree with his mobile phone out, spying on Middlesbrough's training session. Not a bush. Not a building. A tree. Like he's in a cartoon.
This isn't just embarrassing – it's against the rules. And Middlesbrough is furious. They believe Southampton has spied on other occasions too, and they've got an important witness to call when this goes to the disciplinary panel.
Now, this isn't the first time we've seen this. Remember when Leeds United spied on Derby County back in 2019? They got away with a fine. But the rules have been toughened up since then, and now Southampton could be looking at a points deduction.
The panel is reportedly considering the case of the Canadian women's Olympic team, who got a six-point deduction from FIFA in 2024 for using a drone to spy on New Zealand. That entire case was wrapped up in seven days, and the punishment stuck through appeals. Six points – equivalent to two wins – wiped off the board.
Can you imagine if Southampton gets points deducted? They're fighting for promotion from the Championship. They just beat Middlesbrough in the playoff semi-final. And now their promotion hopes could be derailed because some intern thought he was James Bond hiding behind a tree in Middlesbrough.
Here's what kills me about this: Southampton is a professional football club with scouts, video analysts, and all the technology in the world. If they wanted to study Middlesbrough, they could watch tape like everyone else. Instead, they sent a kid to literally hide in the bushes – or trees, as it were.
