Safety concerns often top the list for women considering solo travel, making first-hand accounts from other female travelers invaluable for trip planning. A recent week in San Juan, Puerto Rico offers reassuring perspective.
Posting to r/travel, a solo female traveler reported feeling "genuinely so safe" throughout her week exploring San Juan and surrounding areas. "I haven't felt the need to look over my shoulder once," she wrote, addressing the primary concern many women have about traveling alone.
Her itinerary covered a mix of beach time, adventure tours, and nature exploration. Highlights included the Charco Azul tour (highly recommended), snorkeling at Escambron Beach where her group saw sea turtles up close, and an El Yunque rainforest tour (also highly recommended).
Beach-wise, the traveler ranked Isla Verde as her favorite for water quality and sand. "The water and sand are amazing," she noted. Condado Beach isn't particularly swimmable, and while Punta Las Marias is nice, Isla Verde stood out. All beaches had busy periods but also areas with limited crowds for those seeking quieter spots.
Beyond the safety factor, the trip highlighted how Puerto Rico serves as an accessible international-feeling destination for US travelers — no passport required, English widely spoken, US currency accepted, but distinctly Caribbean in culture and landscape.
"This trip is def a great opportunity to really get out of ur shell," the traveler wrote, encouraging others considering solo travel. The combination of outdoor activities, beautiful beaches, and a welcoming atmosphere made for what she described as an amazing experience.
For women nervous about their first solo trip, offers several advantages. It's a US territory, so there's less culture shock and no currency exchange to navigate. Mobile phones work normally. Emergency services function as they do in the mainland US. Yet you still get the experience of exploring somewhere that feels genuinely different from mainland American cities.
