Despite its glittering reputation as one of Asia's most expensive destinations, Singapore is proving surprisingly affordable for tourists willing to look beyond the luxury hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants.
A recent trip report on r/travel from a traveler who just returned from an extended Asia trip challenges the city-state's pricey image with concrete examples of budget-friendly options.
"Singapore has its reputation as being this ultra expensive place to live, but at least as a tourist, it's quite affordable," the traveler wrote, highlighting three key areas where costs stayed low: accommodation, food, and transportation.
Hawker Centers: The Budget Traveler's Best Friend
The centerpiece of budget travel in Singapore is its hawker center system. These government-subsidized food courts offer authentic meals from Singapore's diverse cultural communities at a fraction of restaurant prices. According to the trip report, hawker centers provided "such a cheap and convenient way to try all of the cultures' foods that reside in Singapore."
Longtime Singapore observers note that hawker meals typically cost between S$3-8 ($2.25-6 USD), making it possible to eat well three times a day for under $20. Popular hawker centers like Maxwell Food Centre, Lau Pa Sat, and Tekka Centre serve everything from Hainanese chicken rice to Indian roti prata.
The cultural trust factor also impressed the visitor, who noted the local custom of using bags to reserve seats: "It was refreshing to be in a place where the people respected its public rules and you could use your bag as a placeholder to reserve a seat."
