Russia's ambassador to Bucharest has publicly warned that Romania "cannot afford" unification with Moldova, marking one of Moscow's most direct interventions in Romanian-Moldovan relations in years.
Vladimir Lipaev, the Russian Federation's ambassador to Romania, made the statement in an extensive interview with TASS, Russia's state news agency, which was subsequently shared on the embassy's official Facebook page on Friday. The timing and directness of the warning signal Moscow's growing anxiety about losing influence in the Black Sea region as both Romania and Moldova deepen their European integration.
"Romania cannot afford unification with Moldova," Lipaev stated, according to HotNews.ro, which first reported the ambassador's comments. The statement comes amid growing calls in both countries for closer integration and as Moldova moves steadily toward EU accession alongside Romania's continued support for its eastern neighbor.
The intervention represents a significant escalation in Russia's diplomatic posture toward the region. For decades, Moscow has maintained troops in Transnistria, the breakaway region of Moldova, and has consistently opposed closer ties between Chisinau and Bucharest. But rarely have Russian officials so explicitly attempted to dictate the terms of the relationship between two sovereign nations—both of which share deep historical, linguistic, and cultural bonds.
