Russia violated a proposed Orthodox ceasefire on Tuesday with 1,820 separate attacks on Ukrainian positions and civilian targets, including a drone strike on a kindergarten in Sumy, Ukrainian military officials reported.
The breaches came despite Moscow's announcement Monday that it would observe a unilateral pause in offensive operations for Orthodox Easter celebrations—a pattern that Ukrainian officials say demonstrates Russia uses humanitarian gestures tactically while ignoring them operationally.
Kindergarten Strike and Civilian Casualties
Russian drones struck a kindergarten facility in the northeastern city of Sumy during morning hours, according to Ukrainska Pravda. Emergency services reported that a rescue operation remained underway as of Tuesday evening, though authorities did not immediately confirm whether children were present at the time of the attack.
The kindergarten strike represented one of dozens of attacks on civilian infrastructure documented by Ukrainian authorities during the supposed ceasefire period. Deutsche Welle reported that at least 42 civilians were killed across Ukraine on Tuesday, with the majority of casualties resulting from artillery strikes on residential areas in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk oblasts.
In Zaporizhzhia, Russian guided aerial bombs struck multiple industrial facilities and residential buildings, igniting fires at a factory, an automobile service center, and a shopping complex. Local authorities reported 12 civilians killed in those attacks, with dozens more injured.
